Baltimore Blues was my first book by Laura Lippman, and I found it exciting. The author does a great job of establishing a good sense of Baltimore. The entire series is an example of a satisfying mystery and a decent narration. Tess is my favorite character, and even though she’s such a mess, I still found her unique. Dream Girl was a dark, complex story of psychological suspense and echoes of misery Plagued by mysterious phone calls. In her novel, Lady in the Lake, Laura blends modern psychological insights with classic noir to create a story of a middle-aged housewife turned into a reporter gathering information on the murder of a forgotten lady. Thanks to this list of books, I can’t wait to read more of Laura Lippman’s work.
I’ve always wondered whether Laura Lippman and David Simon ever discuss her books. David worked on The Wire, the greatest crime drama of all time. Laura writes detective fiction.
There’s plenty of crossover between their fields. Granted, her husband was a producer on The Wire, not necessarily the writer. So, maybe, he doesn’t know quite as much about storytelling as I assume.
I have tried to identify similarities between Laura’s stories and The Wire. Even if David knows next to nothing about crime fiction, he can connect her to the masterminds that made The Wire the juggernaut it eventually became.
Or maybe, Laura doesn’t need the help. Perhaps she knows everything there is to know about crime fiction. After all, her books have the sort of creeping dread I rarely see in the genre.
