Alex Delaware is a character that I’ve been a fan for such a long time now that he’s my favorite of Jonathan’s characters. His chemistry and dynamics in his friendship with Milo makes the characters that much more fascinating. Plus his step-by-step and systematic untangling of details and all the psychology is fascinating to read about.
That said, Clay is still a very cool character, and is one that has quickly grown on me too. He has got an interesting job of his own, and it’s nice to check out something a bit different. Both of them are very well written.
Great author although I haven’t read the last few Delawares. One of the best things about this site actually is being able to see what ones I am still to read. The completionist in me wants to get those read!
I have recently started reading the Rina Lazarus and Peter Decker mystery series by Faye Kellerman and loved them so I thought why not try out Jonathan Kellerman.
I have come to love the Alex Delaware series of novels which open to the lead character enjoying early retirement from psychology practice. Alex’s retirement was precipitated by shock and fueled by burnout.
He had spent weeks interviewing dozens of children that had been molested by a vicious man named Stuart Hickle only to come back and find the molester killed himself. He finds the suicide very bizarre and suspects foul play.
Jonathan Kellerman writes some entertaining mysteries in the Alex Delaware series. He uses his lead to offer sharp insights into the profession and how it can be infested with frauds such as Dr Towle.
Kellerman also writes about the dynamics of the friendship between the comfortably gay Milo and Alex while painting a spectacular portrait of Brindamoor the affluent suburb where the novels are set.
Of course it would not be complete without a few complications, visceral shocks and intellectual surprises.
I first knew Jonathan Kellerman after reading his famous mystery series featuring Alex Delaware, a child psychologist and a special consultant for the Los Angeles Police Department. When the Bough Breaks is an interesting and detailed story with well-developed characters to keep you hooked. Kellerman’s books are engaging and well-plotted to keep the readers thinking. Kellerman gives a sharp insight and creates a good friendship between Alex and Milo while he paints a portrait of the residential island community of Brindamoor. Thanks to this list of books, I’m almost halfway of the series and can’t wait to finish it. When the Bough Breaks has been adapted into a thriller/drama movie by the same name; it’s a breathtaking and compelling, starring Morris Chestnut, Theo Rossi, Regina Hall and Jazz Sinclair. You can watch it on Netflix.
Is Jonathan Kellerman the only author with a book titled ‘When the Bough Breaks?’ Those words sound so familiar. Maybe Kellerman borrowed the title from a nursery rhythm. It doesn’t really matter. But that title gnaws at me whenever I read it, almost like I’ve heard it before.
Anyway, like most people, ‘When the Bough Breaks’ was my first Jonathan Kellerman novel. But then I finished it and did something interesting. I jumped to ‘Deception,’ the 25th novel in the series, just to see if I could follow the story.
Strangely enough, I wasn’t confused at all. I was a little surprised to realize that Milo was a more prominent character than Alex. But that only made me more excited to find out what had happened in their relationship to change their dynamic.
The Alex Delaware books are interesting. And fortunately for me, Kellerman has written a lot of them. So, I can read to my heart’s content.
Another fast read author who is gripping from start to finish. I prefer his stand alone novels as I feel they are more complete in their story line. Sometimes with the series you have to almost know a little about previous books to really understand the characters.
After all these years and all these books, I still love the Alex Delaware series. But, The Butcher’s Theater is still my favorite Keller man book.
The Ghost Orchid – I enjoy the interaction between Milo Sturgis and Alex Delaware. The best part about this book was the ending especially compared to the sad and less-than-uplifting details of the other narrative in the book which is not a negative reaction to the book as a whole. After you finish the book, you’ll understand that comment.
