Piece of My Heart is the first book I checked out with Inspector Banks, and I really enjoy reading about the character. Takes me a while to get through the books because I stop to check out the music he recommends.
Read through the series of novels twice. First time through was in a random order, but the second time was from start to finish.
My favorite would probably be In A Dry Season, but enjoy many of the Banks novels. Going Back is a brilliant short story from Not Safe After Dark that I have a real soft spot for.
Detective Superintendent Banks is my favorite character by Peter Robinson.
I have read all twelve of the novels that focused on the many crime mysteries that Banks tried to resolve. Things got really interesting in the novel In A Dry Season as the lead gets divorced and this paves the way for the introduction of Detective Sergeant Annie Cabbot with whom he has an on and off romance.
Another interesting character that I have grown to love is Richard Burgess the Detective Superintendent nicknamed Dirty Dick. I liked how they started out as hostile foes and over time established a somewhat natural rapport.
Banks is for the most part a detective chief inspector after his promotion from detective inspector. He becomes even more adept at his job which justifies his promotion to Superintendent by the time the novel When the Music’s Over was written.
I have always admired Peter Robinsons’ writing since I was young. The first book in the Chief Inspector Alan Banks, Gallows View, is an excellent introduction to the intriguing mystery series. Inspector Alan Banks has just moved from London to Yorkshire, where there are no many criminal activities. It’s an excellent introduction to the DCI mystery series Banks is expecting to have an easy and quieter job in this new location, but things turn out the opposite. Alan is a curious, wise, and compassionate policeman, which makes him my favorite character. He is a very respectable man with a good reputation, while his wife is easygoing. I love how Robinson develops his characters so well and blends their personal stories so well to keep the reader engaged.
Peter Robinson reminds me of an old college professor. From certain angles (in his pictures), I’m almost certain that he’s the man that put me to sleep in my literature class. But alas, I know it isn’t him.
My first Peter Robinson novel was ‘In A Dry Season,’ the tenth book in the Inspector Banks series. It was so good that I jumped back to book one and read the series in order.
Robinson is not the sort of author I would expect to enjoy because the novels I typically read are fast-paced and filled with explosive action. The Inspector Banks books, on the other hand, are slow. A review described them as ‘Quietly Paced.’
But despite my initial apprehension, the approach doesn’t bother me, and neither does the absence of intense violence. I do not mind following Banks on investigations that have neither car chases nor gun battles. It is an interesting change of pace.
Having enjoyed all of his books have held off reading Standing in the shadows as it brings the end of an era. However just about to start it and I’m sure it will be good.
