Diamond did that thing I like in ‘The Last Detective’ where a detective has to defy his superiors to do the right thing. I love that trope because it establishes the hero as a righteous character worth rooting for.
Peter Diamond feels like he’s channeling older English detectives. He doesn’t care for advanced crime-solving tools and techniques, which means that he keeps clashing with his younger counterparts.
That was enough to win me over if you can believe it because it gives the story an additional edge. If you read as much crime and mystery fiction as I do, after a while, the books start blending together. They all feel the same. Extra plot points like this one, where an old-fashioned detective has to ply his trade in a modern world, keep things interesting.
