I’ve had three interesting encounters with Marston. I read The Railway Detective first, which came out in 2005, but I had no idea what to make of the book. I didn’t dislike it, but the dialog was very expository. Then I jumped to The Wolves of Savernake, which came out in 1995, a decade earlier, and loved it.

Marston’s descriptions of nature were incredible. It felt every word as opposed to simply reading it. Eventually, I read The Excursion Train from 2006, which did a decent job of describing Victorian England’s culture and traditions.

Now, I’ve backtracked to The Railway Detective. With my newfound understanding of Marston’s approach to storytelling, I am curious to see if my opinion of The Railway Detective changes.

Just discovered the Railway Detective series and working through it via Inter Library loans. Look forward to reading the other series assuming I can find the books somewhere!

Edward Marston is also the pen name of Keith Miles, who uses the E.M. moniker to write his stories of historical fiction and various mystery fiction. It was under this pen name that I first read The Wolves of Savernake, first of the Domesday series. Did I partially read this book because I was intrigued by the Domesday name and wanted to find out more? Yes.

While Domesday made me think this could be a sci-fi ‘under the dome’ situation, that was quickly dispelled. This is historical fiction, people! It’s a story all about the king sending out his men so they can take down what the land and people’s resources are. No one likes the Domesday men. Then they must look into the death of a miller who is killed by a wolf in the forest. An interesting story that I’d recommend if you are into historical fiction!
