The first Thomas Perry book I read was Forty Thieves. I wanted something different, a new story unrelated to fantasy, which is the genre I always read. I picked Forty Thieves randomly from Amazon and loved it. But some of the lackluster reviews confused me initially until I realized that Forty Thieves was published in 2016, and Perry has been writing fiction since the 80s.
I assumed that the author’s longtime fans were accustomed to a higher quality of storytelling, which is why I jumped back to The Butcher’s Boy from 1982. I loved it. It had the kind of intricate plotting I expected to see in the books I read. But I think it is only marginally superior to Forty Thieves.
I am anxious to read more stories from Perry’s bibliography just to see how his style has changed over the decades.
