Robert B Parker wrote some fantastic hardboiled detective novels.
Playmates is a novel, from the Spenser series, that is about college basketball, and the scenes discussing the game of hoops are about as compelling as anything with fists or guns.
Another good one is an earlier book called The Judas Goat, where Spenser actually takes a working vacation in Europe. The waiting that Spenser has to do outside his own hotel room in London, just wondering if there’s a hitman in there, is a funny and dramatic moment in the book. And it is actually a relief when the bullets start flying.
The Spenser novels are hands down some of the best detective crime novels out there. Spenser the private detective in the series is something of a Sherlock Holmes character who works in Boston though unlike the serious and contemplative Holmes I find him to be more of a wisecracker. Appaloosa the first novel of the Virgil Cole & Everett Hitch series has always been one of my favorite novels by Robert B Parker. I found the film version of the novel that featured Ed Harris quite entertaining. Still, the Spenser novels have to be the best series he has ever written to date and make for interesting reading as Spenser the private eye evolves over the course of the series to become a badass.
I’ve been so curious to read the Spenser series, and I can now see what I have been missing all along. Godwulf Manuscript is fast-paced and fun, and I’m looking forward to reading more of Parker’s work. The book is set in the 1970s, and I laughed out loud at the clothes descriptions worn by the college students. Spenser is my new favorite character in Robert B. Parker’s work. He has everything I expect of a private detective. It seems to being a PI those days was a lot of work since there were no internet or cellphones. I also liked the Jesse Stone series where the main character’s biggest weakness is his obsessive love of a woman. But to be honest, I liked the TV series more as it’s fascinating than the books.
I watched the Robert Urich led series Spencer for Hire that was based on Robert Parker’s series, but didn’t realize at the time that it was based on the books. Once I found that out, I picked up a couple and was quickly hooked on them. Parker’s no-nonsense writing, coupled with the formidable main characters, makes for some great reading. I have so far read almost the whole series and am not looking forward to reaching the end, but thankfully Parker has some other series to try out, and with his influence on the genre there are plenty of writers inspired by him to keep readers occupied.
A popular author of western fiction and detective fiction, Robert B. Parker’s name is always held high for his contribution to American literature.
I have enjoyed reading his novels featuring a private detective named Spenser.
Robert wrote 40 novels based on this character, which were later adapted into a TV series by ABC. He is known for incorporating encyclopedic knowledge in his work, which tends to keep readers like me glued to his books.
Another popular creation of Rober B. Parker that has intrigued readers like me is Jesse Stone. One of the 4 Western novels featuring the lead characters, Everett Hitch and Virgil Cole, has been made into a movie starring Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris in titular roles.
Though Robert has left this world, his books entertain readers even today and serve as an inspiration to numerous authors across the world.
Robert B. Parker has been dead for quite a while now. But I found myself thinking about him when a friend mentioned his obituary during a random conversation. I felt a strong urge to re-read The Godwulf Manuscript.
It was published in 1973, but it aged well. Yes, you can tell that it comes from a different era. But Spenser is no less compelling. This was a great introduction to the character. You could tell that he wasn’t quite the meathead you expected when you met him.
You can see his wit in every line of dialog. Many modern authors praised Parker for reviving the detective genre. Even though he’s gone, his legacy will persist for generations.
Another author with intriguing books that are a quick read. Love the Spenser series as my favorite.
Mr Parker writes with a flair! His books are full of action and the wittiness of his characters are legendary. Appaloosa remains one of my favorite westerns movies based on book. Both were outstanding.
