I like straightforward mysteries like the ones John Lescroart writes. Don’t get me wrong. I always have a blast reading about psychic detectives that can see the future, commune with the spirits, read minds, and the like. You need those gimmicks to keep the crime fiction genre fresh and interesting.
But sometimes, I just want an ordinary investigator that solves mysteries by collecting clues and interviewing suspects. That is where Lescroart shines. Abe Glitsky is just a guy, a homicide detective doing what he can to keep the streets safe.
Sometimes, that is all I need. The mysteries in a crime fiction novel are more gripping when you know that the hero doesn’t have a paranormal advantage over the villain.
John’s ability to get you involved with the characters is uncanny. They become friends and family, allowing you to wallow in their despair and and revel in their success in the ability to find justice.
His books have wrecked my ability to read a few chapters and then turn off the light to go to sleep. After tossing and turning for an hour I have no choice but to turn on my light and return to see the hero rise once again to win the case and see justice served!
