I am a sucker for reading novels that are about to be made into movies. Since I have been reading Sherryl Woods’ novels for years, I had to read the Chesapeake Shores and Sweet Magnolias series.
The Sweet Magnolias series of novels is an incredible set of novels that explores the power and joy of friendships in difficult times. I loved going back to Serenity in the Netflix adaptation of the series to hang out with Helen, Dana Sue and Maddie. Since I read the novels before watching the series I am impressed that Netflix has tried to be faithful to the plot.
The Chesapeake series is another favorite of mine as loved the small town setting in Chesapeake Bay and the O’Brien family. The series is all about navigating life challenges and romances though I found the Hallmark series to be quite different from the novels.
Sherryl Woods is one of those authors whose books I will read for a few months. Then I will forget her for two or three years. It usually takes a random online review about her latest release to pull me back in.
Typically, I have to reread some of the earlier books before moving on to the new ones, especially if I stopped in the middle of a series. But her novels are relatively short, so the task isn’t particularly challenging.
I don’t think Sherryl intends to add so much humor to her stories. In fact, I think I’m the only reader that finds her novels funny. The author fills her stories with miserable characters that make horrible decisions.
I would never root for them. And yet, I keep reading because I have to know what happens at the end. It sounds like I’m forcing myself to read these books. But in truth, they are genuinely entertaining.
