The town of Fool’s Gold is one of my favorite fictional towns I’ve ever read about and have loved the town since I first read about it in the novel Chasing Perfect. I had barely finished it when I bought the first eight sequels to it. There’s so many quirky and unique characters that live there, with Felicia being the best of them and my absolute favorite that Susan’s ever written.
But it was her novel The Girls of Mischief Bay that had me in tears as I read through it and needed a break from reading upon finishing it.
The first time I read the synopsis for Fool’s Gold, I rolled my eyes. It sounded silly. You have a town of primarily women, and all the new men are hot, wealthy, eligible bachelors. It was a ridiculous and largely fantastical concept.
But you know what? The execution was better than I expected. I think the most surprising bit was the grounded execution, not to mention the emphasis Susan Mallery places on the friendships between the women.
I remember reading an interview where she said that female friendships were important to her. You can see it in Fool’s Gold. It adds a new dimension to these books. The romance isn’t the only attraction.
