Mark Greaney: Biography

Mark Greaney was born in 1967 and is currently 57 years old. Mark Greaney was born in Memphis, Tennessee, USA.

Mark Greaney is the author of the Court Gentry / Gray Man series which currently consists of 13 novels. The Court Gentry / Gray Man series started in 2009 with the novel The Gray Man. The most recently released novel in the Court Gentry / Gray Man series was The Chaos Agent which was released in 2024. There are no upcoming novels for the Court Gentry / Gray Man series.

Mark Greaney has also written the Jack Ryan Universe series which has 39 books including The Hunt for Red October and Patriot Games.

Mark Greaney has made the Kono Mystery ga Sugoi! annual top ten list in Japan twice. His novel Dead End was 9th place in 2015, while Back Blast made the 2017 list at #8.

Prior to the passing of Tom Clancy, Mark Greaney collaborated with Tom on the last few novels that he wrote, and then helped continue the Jack Ryan series following his passing. Mark had already read all of the books Tom wrote, which helped make the transition easier.

Mark has degrees in both international relations and political science. The first novel that Mark ever wrote was called Goon Squad. It was focused on the Bosnian civil war, and the aftermath of it. An agent that he provided a draft to said that he enjoyed it but that it wasn't marketable. However there was a character in Goon Squad titled Court Gentry, and the agent encouraged Mark to write a novel based on that character.

In 2019, Greaney took a step outside of the Gray Man series to write his first standalone novel. This one, entitled Red Metal, was co-authored with Hunter Ripley Rawlings IV, who was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Marine Corps.

In 2017 Greaney's Gunmetal Gray made the list of Best Spy Thrillers.

Several titles from Mark have appeared on The Real Book Spy honors list: Agent in Place was ranked as one of the Best Action Thrillers of 2018. In 2019 his Gray Man story Mission Critical was named among the Best Action Thrillers. Also in 2019 Red Metal was named among the top 5 Best Military Thrillers. It would be Relentless in 2021 to be named of the Best Thrillers of the year. For 2022 the honor of being one of the top 15 Action, Political, Military, and Spy Thrillers of the year would given to Sierra Six.

Actually started reading Mark’s work when he was writing the Jack Ryan books. Once I picked up and read One Minute Out, have been hooked ever since. Just could not put that novel down, and cannot get enough of the few books I’ve checked out from the Gray Man series.

Some of them have been so ruthless that you just have to stop for a bit and catch your breath, whether it is the first or second time reading through it.

Would be interesting to see some of these adapted for a movie or possibly a television series.

The Gray Man series is one of the best spy thriller series there is.

In saying that, what was with One Minute Out going with the first person perspective. That really shook me. Weird change to make.

    Still enjoy the series though.

The Gray Man series of novels by Mark Greaney are some terrific mystery thrillers in the mold of the likes of the works of Frederick Forsythe.

While I have always enjoyed a philosophical or thoughtful exploration in a story, I sometimes love stories with some heroics, daring do, explosions and gunfire which is just what Greaney and the Gray Man series provide.

I finished reading Gray Man the first of the series yesterday and it was so good that I immediately downloaded the second. It was even better than the first and I stayed up the whole night as Gray Man completed his mission.

Gray Man is possibly the most lethal assassin in crime fiction. He gets his jobs from a contractor/handler and as an independent operator only takes cases he approves of. As such, he only kills those he believes are deserving of death.

It would be awesome seeing these series made into a movie or series with someone like Matt Damon as the lead.

Mark Greaney is among the best action-thriller writers of all time.
The Gray Man series tells a story of a hero with a heart, unethical bad guys and some needless innocent deaths.
At some point, I found myself cheering for the Gray Man.
The series is an action-packed, engaging thriller and a real page-turner that kept reading without a break.
Once you begin the series, be sure to fasten your seat belt because it’s one heck of a ride.
If you’re looking for an anxiety-induced action, I highly recommend the Gray Man.
I can’t wait for the movie based on the series.

I first came across Mark Greaney’s work due to the Jack Ryan books he was co-writing with Tom Clancy. I read a couple of that series, then decided to look up Greany’s individual work. I was glad I did, because his Gray Man series are outstanding thriller’s. The series centers around a freelance assassin, whose past continues to haunt him. A some-what routine idea taken to different places due to Greaney’s quick pacing and action set pieces, which continue across the entire series; this is one I will be reading for a while. The upcoming movie adaptation from Netflix is looking to capture the feel of the books, and hopefully it will lead to more.

I remember watching a movie called The Gray Man a long time ago. In the film, the protagonist was disfigured, but he could change his face, wear elaborate masks, or something along those lines.

Every time I search for it, Google recommends the upcoming Joe and Anthony Russo movie, which I suppose I will watch because Avengers Endgame made me a lifelong Joe and Anthony Russo fan.

From the little I’ve read, their film is based on a series of books written by this author. Somehow, I doubt Greaney’s hero (Court Gentry) has anything to do with the Gray Man from my childhood. I still can’t identify that movie.

Anyway, at least my search introduced me to Greaney. ‘On Target’ was entertaining.

Court Gentry is part Spiderman, part Superman, part Incredible Hulk, part Invisible Man, part Terminator, and 100 percent badass. These things are just plain FUN to read.
