I just finished listening to “The Handler” and was so impressed that I immediately borrowed “Dead Drop”. I was really surprised that this was Michael’s first published book – nice tight plot, believable characters and realistic action. Highly recommended if you want a modern spy thriller!
I just finished listening to “Dead Drop”, the second book in the series. It had mostly the same characters as “The Handler”. The plot resonated with the on-going Israel-Hamas-Iran war, and gave some insight into the mentality of various players in the Middle-East milieu. The story was based on a realistic threat to stability in the region and the characters’ reactions to that threat were reasonable. Overall, a very solid effort – but it lacked a little of the spark that made the first book so interesting.
THE HANDLER – This is another one of those books that was recommended by a book site. I’ve got to get better at picking “recommended” books. This is just another cookie cutter sand and camel story. Also, just another special op’s guy who has a falling out with one of those alphabet organizations, asked to come back into the foal, doesn’t want to, then decided it’s his duty to, then kisses and makes up. I’ve read this story numerous times. Nothing new. None of the characters are really likable.
There is some mild action that’s not too bad. The book’s saving grace was how it ended. There is a second book. I guess I’ll give it a try.
