I started reading Jorn Lier Horst because I wanted to expand my reading horizons. I don’t know anything about Norway or Nordic noir thrillers, but Jorn was the obvious starting point for me because he has been shortlisted for so many awards.
The fact that Jorn is a former investigating office doesn’t surprise me. His stories have a level of authenticity you cannot replicate through basic research. You understand the characters in his novels, even when they do things so horrible you could never replicate them.
The puzzles are perplexing, and the solutions are rational. Jorn is the author to read if you want a smart crime fiction novel that doesn’t look down on its audience.
Jørn Lier Horst is a new author to me, and I only started reading his books last year. I’ve come to realize that he’s one of the most intelligent, understated crime writers. Chief Inspector William Wisting has good experience with police duties in Norway and the dark activities conducted in the area. In ‘Dregs Horst,’ Lars Keplar and Soren Hammer give readers an interesting mystery far beyond the language barrier. He presents an excellent characterization of the town’s political and social life not known by people from the outside. The characters in the ‘Katharina Code’ novel are well fleshed, and it’s likable how even after 24 years, Wisting has still not given up on the case of Katharina.
