I only recently discovered Jo Nesbo but he has fast become one of my go to mystery and thriller authors.

I particularly like the Harry Hole series of novels for its tight plotting and Nesbo’s knack in presenting his lead as a lovable character who battles his demons sometimes successfully but many times failing. I have found that my experience deepens with each new release as I get to understand Hole and his motivations.

Harry Hole is the classic loose cannon detective who uses unorthodox methods in his investigations and has few friends or colleagues in the Oslo police force.

The fact that he usually works on tough cases involving fighting the establishment, serial killers, gangsters and bank robbers makes for some thrilling and suspenseful stories. While I like the fact that he is very effective at his work he is always battling his own demons and alcoholism.

Another favorite Jo Nesbo series is the Doctor Proctor series. It follows a seemingly crazy college professor hoping that his luck will finally turn, Lisa his next door neighbor and Nilly her bizarre friend.

I read ‘The Snowman’ because I found a Jo Nesbo biography that called him the most successful Norwegian author of all time. I thought the boast sounded a little arrogant until I realized that he had sold roughly 50 million copies globally, which is astounding.

Naturally, I had to sample his work to determine whether he deserved the hype. ‘The Snowman’ is not the last Nesbo book I will read because I had such a great time following Harry on his latest investigation.

I felt like I was right there with him, sifting through clues, groaning as each breakthrough turned into a dead-end, and fighting against the wave of growing frustration. This was a solid mystery, and I want more.

Jo Nesbo, author Great storyteller. Each book is a real page turner. I think this best to read the Harry Hole books in order although not all were published in English when I started.
