Don’t read Indridason if you want warm, fuzzy crime fiction. I have friends who won’t read the author’s books because of how gloomy the stories tend to be. I don’t know if I’m a sadist, but I like the darkness in Indridason’s work.

The author’s stories are highly atmospheric. You feel like you’re standing right there, in the rain with Inspector Erlendur, trying to make sense of whatever senseless crime will occupy him for the next few chapters.

From what I’ve heard, Nordic crime fiction has a reputation for being gloomy. I don’t know if that is true, but I intend to find out. Indridason was my first Nordic crime fiction author, but he won’t be the last.
