Jussi Adler –Olsen writes darkly humorous atmospheric, and propulsive stories The author has created a wonderful detective in Carl Morck who was lucky to survive a shot in the head that left one person dead and another paralyzed. He is damaged mentally and the interest in his job is over and all he wants is to sit out the rest of the years before retirement. I like how the author incorporates suspense in his work to keep the reader gripped to the last page. The Alphabet House is a psychological thriller set during World War II, Nazi Germany, and 1970s England. The book seems to be well researched with exquisite, horrifying, but fascinating details.
I just finished the second novel in Jussi’s Department Q series, and I don’t know if my experience mirrors that of other people. The first book surprised me. I did not expect to enjoy it because it felt like a generic Nordic noir.
But then I got to know Carl, the protagonist and became completely enthralled by his story. He was such a miserable detective that I was tempted to give up on the novel altogether.
I no longer have the patience for crime fiction novels where the hero is a jaded, dysfunctional detective. I am sick of that trope, and I expected to hate Carl. But by the time ‘The Keeper of Lost Causes’ ended, Carl’s story had hooked me.
The mysteries are decent. But if I’m being honest, I am reading these books because of Carl. He’s the primary attraction.
I stumbled upon Jussi when I googled-books like The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo. Boy, did I hit a gold mine!! The Department Q series quickly became my favorite and I’ve heard Netflix is going to pick it up!
Department Q is one of the best series I’ve read.
