Tennent H. Bagley is a former CIA operative, researcher, and writer who was with the agency for more than two decades working in Clandestine Services. Given his long career, he knows everything about the intelligence techniques of the Soviet Union and Russia and would rise to become the head of counterintelligence in the Soviet bloc.
Bagley is best known for his work as the principal interrogator and case officer in the Yuri Nosenko the KGB defector case. Soon after the John F. Kennedy assassination, the man had asserted that there were no links between Lee Harvey Oswald the assassin, and the KGB, even though he had lived in the USSR for more than two years.
It was in 1942 that Tennent H. Bagley joined the Marine Corps of the United States as a seventeen-year-old student at a Southern California university. He would go through the V-12 Navy College Training Program and be deployed on an aircraft carrier as a lieutenant during the Second World War.
Following the war, he pursued further studies and then joined the CIA where he was first posted to Vienna Austria. While in Vienna, Austria, he was responsible for recruiting Pyotr Semyonovich Popov, a colonel with the GRU. He was also involved in helping his boss at the CIA exfiltrate Peter Deriabin, a KGB Major to the United States.
As for his personal life, he married Maria Lonyay, a Hungarian woman, during the 1950s. In 1972 they moved to Brussels where Tennent was transferred by the CIA. The two had three children Patricia, Christina, and Andrew.
Tennent H. Bagley published his debut work,
Spy Wars, in 2007. In this work, he offers insights into the mystery of Yuri Nosenko's defection to the United States in 1964. He guides his readers through the complex machinations of the Nosenko affair and shatters the version the CIA had then presented to the American public. He shows not only the bloody and merciless betrayals of the KGB but also the potential of many traitors in the US intelligence circles.
Spymaster is a work that Bagley published in 2013 that offers insights into espionage history. Using Kondrashev as a source, he tells of how the former KGB man managed to survive the purges ordered by Stalin even as colleagues and superiors ended up fired or worse, the independence movement named the Prague Spring, how the Hungarian Revolution was doused and how he helped to dispose of the corpses of Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun. The former KGB man also offers some insights into KGB misinformation and propaganda techniques during the Cold War.
