I think I spent a decade listening to my book club gush about Harry Dresden before I finally sat down to read the novels. I don’t know what I expected.
Actually, no, I remember. I knew that Butcher’s novels were urban fantasy. That genre does not appeal to me. I expected angsty teens, vampires, and a lot of sex. But Jim Butcher writes real fantasy.
I know, I know, that sounds snobbish. But I don’t know how else to describe it. The Harry Dresden novels are not YA romance disguised as fantasy. You have a fully realized magical world littered with a plethora of interesting supernatural entities. I love it. I can’t believe it took me this long to read these novels.
I’m a really big Dresden Files fan. I’ve listened and read everything to do with The Dresden Files. Well I decided to give the first book of the Codex Alera “Furies of Calderon” a try and I have to say that I’m loving it and Jim Butcher has moved to the #1 spot for my favorite author.
