George R.R. Martin: TV/Movies Based on Books
Nightflyers, a novella and series of short stories of the same name, has actually been adapted twice. The first for a movie and then in 2018 for a television series that aired on SyFy. Martin was not directed involved with the series as he had an exclusive contract with HBO at the time. The series was not renewed for a second season.
Of course, the most well known adaptation of Martin's work is the Game of Thrones series based on his Song of Ice and Fire series. The series ran for seven seasons on HBO after premiering in 2011. The series covers all of the books that were written to date in the series before it eventually ran out of material and they had to finish the series without the books as their guide. These later seasons were not as well received and took place after George R.R. Martin had stopped writing on the show.
The series launched the careers of many actors and made others more famous than they had previously been. Key players on the show include Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), and Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister).
After the series ended a prequel series called House of the Dragon was developed. It is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and features the beginning of the end of House Targaryen. The show was another hit and it was renewed for a second season shortly after its premiere.
Nighflyers was a film in 1987, based on the 1980 novella. The film had a small budget which lead to many plot elements being cut. Martin was not happy about this, but has said since that he beleives that the film saved his career and directly led to all of his written work that came after.
