I consumed Brad Meltzer’s comics for a while before I ever saw his face. Then I read The Inner Circle and wondered why the author’s name sounded so familiar. I did a Google search and realized that the same Brad Meltzer responsible for my favorite DC comics miniseries of all time had also written political thrillers.
Meltzer’s ability to jump back and forth between comics and traditional novels speaks volumes about his versatility. I cannot believe the author has consulted with the likes of George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
I can’t wait to throw Meltzer’s credentials in the face of every adult I know who looks down on comic books. Then again, they did not care when I told them that Neil Gaiman had written comics.
THE NAZI CONSPIRACY – This is an interesting read. I enjoyed it. But and this is a BIG BUT, I was surprised by how little time was spent on writing about the actual alleged conspiracy to kill the Big Three. Most of the book was taken up by events leading up to the meeting in Tehran, Iran in 1943. There was no substance to the alleged plot to kill the three (Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin) and yes, I understand there isn’t much credible information out there on the subject (according to what is presented in this book). I say alleged because there is some doubt brought up in the book.
The book reads like Mr. Meltzer’s (and Josh Mensch) two other books “The First Conspiracy: The Secret Plot to Kill George Washington” and “The Lincoln Conspiracy: The Secret Plot to Kill America’s 16th President – and Why It Failed”. Those too were kind of long in the tooth when reading them, although they too were interesting.
I’m glad my daughter gave me this book for my birthday. I’d been wanting to read it. It was good to refresh my memory on some of the history that was brought up.
THE LIGHTNING ROD – Having met Mr. Meltzer, having read many of his books and enjoying his TV show some years ago, I look forward to reading this book. I read his previous book (The Escape Artist) with Nola and Zig, which was very good, and I recommend reading it before this one.
I knew from the first sentence of the book, nine words, that this was going to be a good read. “These were the last fourteen minutes of his life”. BUT there are so many twists and turns I was getting motion sickness. It was an interesting read but there were too many subplots, but in the end they all make sense. Spoiler: I foresee book three for Nola and Zig.
My recommendation: Read it.
