No offense to Paul Doherty, but every time his name came up, I imagined a stuffy, out-of-touch lecturer who was a little too obsessed with history to permit the mysteries at the center of his stories to shine.
I don’t know if Doherty is as stiff and stuffy as I imagine, but descriptions of his work always appealed to me because I love history, and I adore authors whose passion for the subject shines through in their work, regardless of the genre.
I don’t know why it took me so long to dip my toes into his work, but I finally got my hands on a box of second-hand Paul Doherty novels from a store, and they are everything I expected. Every time the author starts delving into the disgusting smells of life in previous centuries, I perk up.
Paul Doherty has the ultimate art of resurrecting his characters; a good example is restoring the Romans into people with emotions and flesh as they tried to survive the wild and harsh environment. His books leave me craving for more. Ancient Rome series is a great historical thriller and got me curious about the Roman Empire, which I never imagined before. The writing of the Egyptian Mysteries series is beautiful, with lots of suspense set in ancient Egypt. The descriptions are so vivid, and it appears Doherty did extensive research. Doherty uses detailed characterization in most of his books to give the reader complete information. Thanks to this list of books by Paul.
