The Broken Harbor may well be Tana’s best book. Like The Witch Elm, there is so much more going on than just a mystery, as there is some fascinating social commentary.
Every character she writes, with strengths and flaws are concisely described, with her story always gripping and fluid. You never want her stuff to end yet can’t stop reading until you get to the end.
In some of her novels, she does a great job of slowly giving the reader time getting to know every single one of her key players.
Cassie Maddox is a fantastic character that I would like to see return, why has there never been a sequel?
The Searcher by Tana French is a spellbinding , nuanced and eerie work that has to be among her best works. French stays away from the chaos of traditional crime fiction and writes a classic novel. The lead is a traveler that reveals the shadowy side of a small town imbued with a simmering menace. The storytelling is atmospheric and there is an unexpectedly moving friendship reminiscent of peat blogs. I love the novel as it differs from her previous works in its sparseness of setting as compared to the The Witch Elm’s gathered family or the bustle and chaos of Dublin Murder Squad. I found it an addictive novel and could not stop turning the pages. The novel is a creepy story that is written in slow burn style that focuses on the mystery as much as the character’s lives. Packed full of shocking reveals, twists and turns, this has to be one of my favorite Tana French novels.
In her debut novel In the Woods, Tana French walks between police procedural and psychological thriller. The author carefully develops a complex personality for her characters with a past, a sense of humor and you can help but wonder what happens to the detective more than how the case ends. In The Woods is an excellent read marking the debut of thrilling psychological suspense. The series tells the story of three children who went missing in the woods in the outskirts of Dublin. Adam Ryan was the only surviving member of the three children, and there has been no sign of the other two for over 20 years. The 2019 adaptation of the Dublin Murders starring Killian Scott is a real crime thriller series.
Tana French’s Dublin Murder Squad series started off strong and has not slowed at all since then, with each new book showing off more of her taut and intriguing writing. This series is different from most in that the leads are not always the same characters from book to book, and are sometimes quite different people from who carried the previous volume. Even still, the leads are always both flawed and empathic people, who make getting into the crimes and understanding their direction very easy. This is a series that has just started out but I hope to see continue for a while to come. The new television series based on the series, called Dublin Murders, should help keep interest alive and draw in new readers.
Tana French’s ability to evoke sadness is disturbing. Hers are not the first sad books I’ve read. But Tana is different. The tragic stories I’ve encountered thus far are predictable. You can tell that the author is trying to pull at your heartstrings.
With Tana, the sadness has a way of sneaking up on you. You never see it coming, which is an incredible skill. I think the author’s characterization is to blame. You cannot help but care for her protagonists.
And when certain things (that I won’t spoil) occur, you are left with a hollow but surprisingly painful sensation. Tana manipulates your emotions without tumbling into melodramatic territory. She’s a true master.
Amazing author! You care about the characters and also get wrapped up in the intrigue!! I usually get books from the library but I buy hers!
Can’t wait to get The Hunter!
