Paul Dini is an American author and TV producer who is best known for his work producing for the DC Comics universe, particularly animated series.
Dini was instrumental in the making of popular animated shows such as
Justice League Unlimited,
Batman,
Justice League,
Superman, and
Batman Beyond. He was also involved in the creation of iconic characters that have become integral to DC Comics, such as Harley Quinn.
Outside of DC, he has worked on other animated series such as
Animaniacs as the creator of Minerva Mink, Tiny Toon Adventures, Krypto the Superdog, and Duck Dodgers, among others. Paul Dini has also been a contributor to the
Masters of the Universe and
Transformers series.
After leaving Warner Bros., he got into live-action storytelling, as he became a member of the writing team for the series
Lost on ABC. Dini has also been involved in comics and has written stories for Captain Marvel, Superman, Zatanna, and Batman.
Paul Dini has also produced some original creations, such as the rebellious teenage daughter of Santa Claus named Jingle Belle, in addition to Sheriff Ida Red, who lives in the made-up town of Mutant in Texas. For his work in animation, he has won five Emmy Awards.
Outside of his work as a creator and producer, Dini is a wildlife photographer and is passionate about cryptozoology.
In his work
Batman: Harley and Ivy, he tells the story of Harley Quinn, who is working with Poison Ivy to challenge Batman.
They break out of jail, run into the South American jungle, and cause a lot of chaos on a Hollywood movie set. Meanwhile, Harley has shown herself to be better than the sidekick of the Joker, even as Ivy shows how much she cares about her.
In 2015, Paul Dini published the work
Batman: Harley Quinn, in which he introduces Harley Quinn into the world at a time of a huge crisis.
Once upon a time, Harley was Dr. Harleen Quinzel and worked as a psychiatrist. But she has lost everything and leaves New York to find the Joker while wearing the costume of a jester. She joins Joker in his mission to spread chaos, as they destroy the weapons of Penguin’s crew.
In this work, Harley is portrayed as a wild, funny, and brave character rather than simply Joker's sidekick, as she manages to make trouble on her own and makes Gotham stand up and listen.
Zatanna by Paul Dini is a work that stars the character Zatanna, who was once a stage magician and is now a real sorceress.
She is battling bad guys with strong magic in San Francisco, even as she balances life in the limelight with superhero heroics and visits puppet shows believed to be haunted.
These are stories that combine adventure and humor and have been described as quirky and fun by fans.
