Kingdom of Sweets is a very unique retelling of “The Nutcracker”, and Johansen writes her characters as if she doesn’t mind whether we like them or not, just so that we relate to their sufferings. It is extremely grim, and fairly violent, but I still very much enjoyed it. I was a big fan of her Tearling series, and this is a very different story from those.
