My friends made a mistake when they recommended Nalini Singh. They heaped a little too much praise on her name. I expected something new, something original. But I think it would be an exaggeration to use any of those terms in relation to Singh’s novels.
She writes paranormal romance, which means she relies on the same tropes as every other YA fantasy author. I have consumed so many paranormal and fantasy novels over the years that I don’t expect to encounter any original ideas at this point in my life.
The lack of originality doesn’t take anything away from Singh’s work. From what I was told, she tends to emphasize the romance aspects above everything else. As such, when I read the Guild Hunter books, the amount of world-building in the series surprised me.
The Psy-changeling novels were just as rich. I expected romance novels masquerading as YA fantasy. But that wasn’t the case. Singh does a decent job of accommodating fantasy diehards like myself.
