I’ve great respect for Illona Andrews for her urban fantasy books. She sets the scenes so well, using the right words to keep the story flowing. Kate Daniels is my favorite character and doesn’t take crap from anyone and admits whenever she makes mistakes. Her flirting with Curran was good, and I appreciated that Kate didn’t compromise herself just because he was the Beast Lord. She’s also among the best urban fantasy heroines I’ve read about. It’s impressive how Illona was able to create a female magic-wielder who wasn’t a witch. Innkeeper Chronicles series is charming, light-hearted, and refreshing. There is magic, murder, and mayhem in this delightful series. I found Dina, the innkeeper, to be a likable character.
I always associate urban fantasy novels like the Kate Daniel series with female authors. You can blame that assumption on the fact that most YA/Urban Fantasy novels I’ve read were written by female authors.
So, imagine my surprise when I learned that Ilona Andrews was a pen name for a husband/wife team. I re-read the first few Kate Daniels novels to see if I could find the places where one writer stopped and the other one started, but I couldn’t see anything.
To be fair, I don’t know how their operation works. Maybe one of them creates the ideas, and the other writes them. It doesn’t really matter. But the discovery has enhanced my appreciation for the series.
These books are so fun and now they are coming out with graphic audio which really brings the books to life! If you haven’t tried them, give it shot. You won’t be disappointed!
