I am amazed by Susan Wittig Albert’s ability to remain relevant. When you read Witches’ Bane, you can’t tell that it was written in the early 1990s. Okay, that isn’t true. She makes one or two references that immediately highlight the time period.
People say and do things in the novel that younger readers wouldn’t understand. However, the mystery holds up. I can understand why people are divided over China. She isn’t necessarily the most emotional character we have ever met in this genre. But I think that is a strength. Her relatively stiff demeanor allows her to stand out. On a side note, I was surprised to learn that Susan wrote some of the Nancy Drew novels.
I know when I pick up one of Susan Wittig Albert’s books that I have an enjoyable read ahead. I usually buy the kindle version of one of her latest books to take on vacation. I especially like her China Bayles series, which mixes gardening and murder and, amazingly enough, it all works! The characters grow and evolve from each book to the next, which makes the storyline even more interesting.
She has so many different series to read and I am enjoying them all. The Darling Dahlias is an especially good series. I really enjoy learning about life back then and the choices they had to make. Enjoy!!
I have read a few of her China Bayles series. Each book is named after some kind of plant, herb or flower. China Bayles solves crimes and she never disappoints.
Susan Wittig Albert is one of my favorite authors. I just discovered her “Darling Dahlias” series, and I’ve read 5 of them so far, just starting the 6th. She takes us back to the early 30s, when life was simple and yet hard, when banks were failing and folks were struggling after the Great Depression. This small, sweet Southern Alabama town is filled with characters who take care of each other, especially a garden club of ladies called the Darling Dahlias, who are especially interwoven and care deeply about each other, who are brilliant and thrifty, and do what they can for each other and their community. There’s something sweet and comforting about this series, and I can’t wait to read the next book. It reminds me of my own small Louisiana town and yet brings me to a time when folks sat on the porch and everybody knew everybody else. Besides all this, the stories are quirky and crafty, and brilliant at the same time, as the Dahlias solve mysteries and save their beloved Darling, Alabama. Give this series a try if you’re looking for something to dive into this summer!
