My introduction to Robert Whitlow was not good. I watched ‘The List’ and ‘The Trial’ back-to-back and hated them both. Then I realized that both films were adaptions of Whitlow novels, and I immediately dismissed him as a lousy writer unworthy of my attention.
A year ago, I borrowed ‘The List’ from my local library and read it, having forgotten about the movie. The story was familiar to my ears, but I couldn’t figure out why. Anyway, I read and loved it so much that I went ahead and read every other Whitlow novel I could find.
It sounds like an impressive feat, but the author’s books are relatively small. I recommended ‘The List’ to a friend of mine a week ago, and they reminded me of all the terrible things I said about the adaptation. Then I realized why the story sounded so familiar.
It just shows you that if you have to choose between reading the book and watching the movie, you should always read the book.
