I have fond memories of ‘His Dark Materials.’ People are constantly pitting Pullman’s books against C.S. Lewis’ Narnia novels. More often than not, they will praise Pullman’s stories by putting the Narnia books down.

I never understood that attitude. I love both authors. They injected so much magic into my childhood. ‘His Dark Materials’ doesn’t have the whimsy I appreciate in Narnia.

But it still swept me off my feet and pulled me into an imaginative world, which is all I want from fantasy. I want to read a book that allows me to forget the worries of real life. Looking at this list, I am tempted to buy ‘Northern Lights.’ I last read it in my teens. I wonder whether it holds up.
