Max Haines was born on January 4th, 1931. Max passed away September 30th, 2017 at 86 years old. Max Haines was born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Max Haines was a Canadian true crime author and newspaper columnist. He wrote a memoir The Spitting Champion of the World and 27 true crime books. He had over 3 million readers a week for his newspaper column. Haines received the Derrick Murdoch Award from the Crime Writers of Canada in 2005.

The Mystery Challenge series consists of interactive mystery puzzle novels in which the reader is presented with an assignment and must solve an imaginary crime using evidence, including witness statements, clues, maps, photographs, and forensic evidence. Haine’s book Celebrity Murders and Other Nefarious Deeds is a trivia book that should be read in bite-sized portions. The author adds more than just trivial details, including birthdates, home addresses, and descriptions of the lives of these nefarious people.

Canadian Crimes is Haine’s collection of small true crime stories on Canadian crimes. The stories span close to 150 years, and only a few involve guns. They include the assassination of D’Arcy McGee to the well-known Paul Bernardo rape/murder case that made headlines around the world. The book also explores the case of the wrongly convicted David Milgard, exonerated after 27 years.

Murder Most Foul features more than fifty quirky criminal case stories from eleven countries around the world. One of the cases is that of Norman “Red” Ryan, convicted of armed bank robbery and later reformed while in prison. They had to change the Canadian law so he could be released early, only for him to be gunned down during an armed robbery.

Unnatural Causes explores 65 murder cases and how these killers can come up with distinct ways of murder and how some actually got away with it.

In Instruments of Murder, Haines takes us through more than fifty crimes from around the world committed with the least likely of instruments. The infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer case is also explored here.

In Spitting Champion of the World is a collection of stories about growing up in rural Nova Scotia during the 1930s-1950s.
