Before I read her work, I would have argued that Marian Keyes wasn’t my cup of tea. Everyone said that her books were dark and disturbing, which is the last thing I wanted to read.
I only bought ‘The Charming Man’ because it had a bright, glitzy cover, the kind you find in the chic-lit genre. But ‘The Charming Man’ was not chic-lit. It told the stories of several women and the person who abused them. It was the sort of haunting novel I had no interest in reading.
But it was so compelling that I couldn’t stop. To this day, I find myself returning to the book every few months. Despite the dark subject matter, it has a surprising amount of humor.
