Left Neglected – a very interesting book, authored with feeling, about a condition caused by traumatic brain injury where the brain does not recognize anything on the left. Worthwhile read.
Still Alice – this book deals with early onset alsheimers. The descriptions in the book would also apply to anyone with an alsheimer condition or dementia of some kind. This desease impacts everyone connected with the patient and the author does a great job of describing the progression in a thoughtful and meaningful fashion. There is also information about available resources.
Every Note Played – This main character in this book has ALS, a debilitating disease with no cure. As the story progresses, his body continues to fall prey to the disease. My mother died from ALS but long before her body succumbed to the ravages of the disease. After reading the book, I was grateful she did not have to experience the full impact of ALS.
Still Alice made me cry like a baby over and over again. Lisa Genova really knows how to put you in the characters shoes and you really get to experience the confusion, heartache and loss that comes with early onset Alzheimer’s (or any memory loss condition for that matter). I absolutely recommend this book, even though it falls outside my usual fantasy reads – just make sure to have tissues handy!
