Kristin is a writer that does a fantastic job of transporting me off to places that I could never get to on my own.
She also does an outstanding job of showing that a woman can be strong in mind and in body, and take care of her kids even though she’s got little to work with to start with.
Her work always takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions which make you think about life from another time and that of today, and then conclude with an ending that crushes your soul in the best possible way.
Kristin Hannah is an exceptional author that has a knack of making one feel part of the stories she writes, rather than an onlooker.
In the Four Winds which is my second favorite work she tells an emotional and sweeping story of survival, family and love set in California and Texas during the Great Depression.
The work is testament to the resilience, hope and strength of the human spirit to go through adversity.
Kristin writes with powerful insight, grace and courage as she captures the panorama of the Second World War by shining a light on an intimate part of history that most of us never get to see in the Women’s’ War.
The Nightingale is my all time Kristin Hannah novel. It is the story of two sisters separated by circumstance, years, passion, ideals and experience. The two sisters embark on a journey towards finding freedom, love and survival in war torn and German occupied France.
I have recently been watching Firefly Lane on Netflix and I think Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke do a very good job portraying two of the most memorable characters from the novel.
With powerful insight and grace, Kristin Hannah captures the overview of the Second World War and brings to light an intimate part of history that is rarely seen. The Nightingale is an interesting and moving portrait of the Nazi occupation in France and what young girls and widows went through when left behind. The book tells a story of women surviving terrible circumstances and shows how this underestimated gender finds a way to take action. It shows that even those who look weak can possess a lot of strength. The ending is beautiful, but it will leave you broken. The nightingale movie is far more intriguing and fascinating than the book. Even if you are not a historical fiction lover, I think Nightingale is worth a try.
Like a lot of people, The Nightingale was my introduction to Kristin Hannah’s writing. I am a fan of historical novels but had never come across her writing before. I am glad I did now, because her novels and characters have a different take on them, being just slice-of-life passages from a different time. This makes them stand out from the rest of the genre as there is no murder or political plot to uncover. I have gone back and read a few of her other novels, and have quite enjoyed them. There is a new Netflix series out based on one of her older books that is really good in its own right called Firefly Lane, and I will definitely be checking it out.
I don’t think anyone has ever accused Kristin Hannah of going too far. Some people write torture porn. They classify it as compelling drama. But really, they spend hundreds of pages tormenting their characters for no apparent reason.
Kristin doesn’t cross into those waters. I fell for her when I read ‘The Great Alone.’ She did an incredible job of describing the devastating consequences of PTSD.
But she never went too far. She kept us in that volatile state of misery and distress long enough for us to understand the plight of her characters. And just when we couldn’t take anymore, she offered us a lifeline.
Finding the balance between tragedy and hope is difficult. Few authors can thread that needle.
I took The Nightingale with me on vacation and finished it in 2 days. I couldn’t put the book down, I had to know what happened. Not many books capture my interest like that, just had to say, I’ve read several of your other books, but for some reason this one was special, I still think about it! Great read. Thanks!
The Nightingale is one of my favorite books!
I just finished reading The Women. It definitely is a book that brings forth many mixed emotions from the reader: pride, sadness, hope, and anger. Thank you Kristin Hannah for writing this book.
The Nightingale is one of my favorite books & I didn’t think it was possible for Kristin to ever match that book. But she has done just that with her latest book The Women.
Winter Garden – based on an actual historical event that the author researched. Excellent read shining a light on the awful and painful circumstances some people have lived through and come out on the other end. Also a perfect illustration that what you see isn’t always what you think – there are layers under the surface you know nothing about. And I think it’s also a great example of never giving up hope.
Great story teller. She’s even made me appreciate historical fiction.
The Women – EXCELLENT BOOK! This book grabbed me and drew me in. I never served but had a husband that was a Marine and a son in the USAF – neither saw action although my son was in Afghanistan, both died in 2020 – 4 months apart and we have always been a patriotic family. From the book – “Some women had worn love beads in the sixties; others had worn dog tags.” This is about one of the women who wore dog tags – her journey to become a nurse; go to Vietnam; while in-country; coming home to fellow-Americans, her family and other veterans; up to the dedication of the Vietnam Memorial. At the end, I had tears streaming down my face.
Winter Garden is my all time favorite book. I can usually figure out what is going to happen before the end of the book. I was surprised not once, but twice in this book. It was outstanding!
The book THE WOMEN was a fantastic read. It brought out just how poorly Vietnam Vets were treated, not to mention the Women Vets. They were completely ignored and discounted. This story opened up my eyes to a lot of injustices to them. What they went through was traumatic as was shown by the main character in this story. It was a difficult read in some instances but worth it. A real tribute to the Women who served our Country in Vietnam.
