Kelley Armstrong does something very few paranormal romance authors can boast about. She writes books that hold up. I read ‘Bitten’ for the first time when I was ten. It was just one random urban fantasy novel among dozens my school had added to the library. I loved it but couldn’t find the sequel.
Fifteen years later, I read ‘Bitten’ again and loved it. I can’t be sure, but I think Armstrong’s novels are YA. Naturally, they have romance. And yet, romance is rarely at the forefront of the author’s stories.
Instead, Armstrong emphasizes the characters, lore, and atmosphere, which I appreciate. Many YA novels lose me because I start reading them for the fantasy/paranormal aspects. But then, a few chapters down the line, they become full-blown romance novels. I hate that.
I’m a huge fan of Kelley Armstrong’s work, and I’m in love with how she handles her characterization so perfectly. She serves a strong debut of Cainslevvile series featuring Olivia and Gabriel’s story, and I can recommend it to lovers of mystery. A Stitch in Time series is an atmospheric romance with some gothic vibes while it’s a modern twist on the classic genre. In the debut novel of the Otherworld series, the characters are engaging and exciting and kept me turning pages. I felt emotionally attached to the characters as I felt right there with them, experiencing everything through their eyes and brains. The Dark Powers list of books was real page-turners, and it was my favorite. They had brilliant plots, intriguing characters, and menacing settings.
Very much enjoyed both the Stitch in Time and also Rockton series. I am looking forward to reading more!
