Whenever someone asks me why I don’t like sci-fi, I point to John Ringo’s work. It takes them a while to understand my point. I have read every single novel on the list above because Ringo gets me.
A lot of the science fiction I’ve encountered takes itself too seriously. The authors in question are trying too hard to philosophize. That is the best-case scenario. In the worst cases, you get massive tomes filled with boring lectures about the workings of the technology in a fictional setting.
Ringo’s books have plenty of world-building. As a reader, you have a solid understanding of the alien races the author introduces. And yet, Ringo’s books are also fun. I always have a blast reading his stories. If literary sci-fi were more like a Ringo novel, I would read more books in the genre.
Been a fan of John Ringo since the late 90’s. Haven’t read everything, but have read a lot. Many more are in the TBR pile that sadly grows by leaps and bounds now that I am retired. If only I could just sit and read, but too many distractions -friends, family, pets, obligations, etc. You have to have a resistance to giving upon books that are full of blood and gore and some of your favorite characters don’t always make it, but the read is worth it. Hope for many more great reads from John Ringo.
