Your opinion of John Scalzi’s novels will depend on your opinion of the author’s blog. The differences between Scalzi the blogger and Scalzi the author are almost nonexistent. He uses the same voice.
I love the Stargate franchise. But I hated Stargate Universe. Scalzi’s name came up in an online Stargate forum. Apparently, he consulted on Stargate Universe. I read his books more out of curiosity than anything. I wanted to see if I could identify the episodes he had worked on based on his Sci-Fi stories.
But I forgot about that objective once I started the ‘Old Man’s War’ series. I read the blog afterward and immediately noticed the similarities between the two. I like both. Scalzi has a snarky voice he cannot hide, no matter how hard he tries. He makes me laugh a lot.
John Scalzi’s writing has improved over the years. I’m a big fan of his Old Man’s War series though I wasn’t sure of what I would get in it. It turned out that Scalzi’s work was precisely what I needed. The riveting drama blended with interplanetary politics and violent thrills and action presented an easy sense of humor that kept me engaged. The Collapsing Empire marks another return to space opera as the series debut, introducing his fans to a new universe and new characters. I love how Scalzi’s consistency cuts across his books with a good balance of humor and action. I’m planning on reading the entire list of books by John Scalzi this year.
I enjoy Scalzi’s humor the most. Loved Redshirts and The Kaiju Preservation Society.
Starter Villain was the absolute most entertaining book I read this year. Books often make me smile or groan, but rarely do they make me laugh out so loudly that I awakened my dog. Once I finished, I went to Amazon and purchased 10 more copies. They made for some easy Christmas shopping!
Old Man’s War series is very entertaining too. It’s classed as science fiction, but you do no not need to be a fan of the genre to enjoy.
