I read Diamond In the Window in 1962, it’s publication year. I was 10 and an avid and reader library user. What a book! I had never read anything like it and read it over and over. In one short book Langton introduced her characters (a quirky family), an historical area (Concord, Massachusetts), some off its famous inhabitants (including Emerson, Thoreau and Alcott) and most interesting then and now to me the philosophical ideas of India. Entwining all was the mystery of long time missing family members, a gazing globe in the garden and a crystal in the tower of the huge crumbling, Victorian house it was all contained in. The next books came out years later (Swing in the Summerhouse and The Astonishing Stereoscope) and although I was 19 they were devoured also.
In my mid20’s I owned a bookstore on Prince Edward Island, Canada. When ordering these titles I discovered there were more and immediately read The Fledgling when it came in. I still recommend these four titles as gifts for young readers and they are always enjoyed. They are so lucky to be able to read them in order and all at once.
In the Fledgling a young girl befriends a Canada Goose and is taught how to fly. Such a wise goose! She is a member of the original quirky family but the first siblings have, of course, grown older.
Please search them out and enjoy the immersion.
I have read many of the Homer Kelly titles and enjoyed their simplicity of style and New England sense of dry humour. Through all the books I have read of Langton ‘s her love of this area of the world is evident and enjoyed.
