The Mitford books are delightful. People kept using that word to describe them. ‘Delightful’ came up a lot in reviews. But I didn’t believe them because there is no such thing as Christian comedy, not in literary format.
But you know what? Jan Karon pulled it off. I wasn’t busting a gut or anything. The novels are more humorous than funny. I know, I know, that sounds like the same thing.
But to me, ‘Humorous’ is any book that makes me smile, whereas ‘Funny’ means that I’m laughing out loud. I rarely laugh at Karon’s stories. But they always make me smile, and that is more than enough.
I stumbled upon Jan Karon while helping to inventory at our local library. I read the first in the Mitford series and was hooked. It was well o/10 years ago. I am now re-reading the series and am starting number 11. Delightful, engaging, thoughtful & nostalgic. Thank you, Jan Karon, for insightful & inspired reading.
