Henry Winkler
Henry Winkler (Henry Franklin Winkler) was born on October 30th, 1945 and is currently 80 years old. Henry Winkler was born in New York City, New York, USA.
Henry Winkler is an actor, author, director, and producer. He is the son of German Jewish survivors of the Holocaust who fled to the United States in 1939.
During his childhood, he had dyslexia and, as such, struggled in school. As such, he had struggled with low self-esteem for years until he discovered acting, which was the only thing that made him feel truly alive.
It all started in the eighth grade when he was cast in a school play, and he never looked back. As a young man, he secured small roles and appeared in commercials before being cast in the 1974 film
The Lords of Flatbush.
But it was when Henry Winkler was cast in
Happy Days as a motorcycle-riding and leather-jacket-wearing cool guy that he came into his own and became one of the biggest actors of the era.
During the 1980s, Winkler worked as a director and producer and was involved in the likes of
Sabrina the Teenage Witch,
Arrested Development,
The Practice, and
MacGyver.
Beyond his work as an actor, Henry Winkler is an author who draws on his struggles with dyslexia as a child. He is also a cofounder of the
Children's Action Network and has offered monetary and logistical support to a range of children’s charities.
In 2003, Henry Winkler published
I Got a D in Salami, in which he chronicles his struggles with dyslexia, which made him an academic underachiever.
It tells the story of Hank, a science-loving learner who is attending Ms. Adolf’s science project class. While he has a passion for science, he hates writing reports; hence, he usually watches TV to distract himself.
However, when an interesting program rolls by too quickly, he decides to open the cable box and slow it down, so that he can read the program directory at his own pace.
It is an interesting science project, but soon after, he finds that the family’s pet iguana has laid eggs in the disassembled cable box.
In
Holy Enchilada!, Ms. Adolf’s class is having a luncheon with foods from across the world, and Hank could not be happier, as there are no review questions, outlining, or reading this time around.
Things get interesting when Ms. Adolf’s face turns red after eating some super spicy enchiladas that Hank made. She believes someone had played a mean prank on her and punishes all the learners. She tells them they will not be leaving until the guilty student steps forward.
Hank knows his dyslexia might have led him to miscount the peppers he put in the food, but he is afraid to step forward and admit his mistake.
In his 2012 published work
Zero to Hero, Henry Winkler published a children's fiction work that tells the story of Billy Broccoli, an eleven-year-old boy.
His family just moved into a new neighbourhood, and he hopes to join the local baseball team and make new friends, only to discover a ghost in his bedroom. The ghost, named Hoover, is confident, funny, and full of advice.
Hoover shows him how to stand up for himself, fit in, and face the school bully. Along the way, he learns about staying cool under pressure, friendship, and bravery.
