George S. Clason (George Samuel Clason) was born on November 7th, 1874. George passed away April 7th, 1957 at 82 years old. George S. Clason was born in Louisiana, Missouri, USA.

George S. Clason is an author most closely associated with The Richest Man in Babylon, a book that was first published in 1926.

He served in the United States Army during the Spanish-American War and went to the University of Nebraska.

George formed two companies the Clason Map Company of Denver, Colorado and the Clason Publishing Company. The Clason Map Company was the first to ever publish a road atlas of Canada and the United States of America, however it didn’t survive the Great Depression.

He’s best known for writing this series of informational pamphlets about being thrifty and achieving financial success. He began writing the pamphlets in 1926, using parables that were set back in ancient Babylon. Insurance companies and banks started distributing the parables, and the most famous ones got compiled into his book The Richest Man in Babylon. He’s credited with coining the phrase “Pay yourself first”.

George moved to Denver in 1900. He had two kids that were authors in their own right: Robin Clason McKown and Clyde B. Clason. He was married to Ida Ann Venable and Anna Burt.

In 1949, he moved to Napa, California, where he died on April 5, 1957.
