Garry Disher is a mystery and crime author whom I discovered recently, thanks to this booklist. The Dragon Man, the debut novel in the Inspector Hal Challis series, is set in the Peninsula, land on the outskirts of Melbourne. Hal Challis was a lovable character, and I liked how he stayed calm when facing challenges and didn’t appear to be drinking. Garry has a unique way of portraying his characters in the books. It’s incredible how he interconnects two murder investigations, and I couldn’t help but wonder if they are connected. Kickback is a short and quick read and a great introduction to the Wyatt series. I like Wyatt; he is an intelligent and reserved character who cares less about other people, and even though he’s a criminal, he has some morals.
Some authors are convinced that they have to throw their detectives into harrowing situations with demented killers and hair-raising gunfights to endear the characters to readers. But action heroes in the vein of Jack Reacher survive harrowing situations all the time, and they rarely win me over.
I usually respond to law enforcement officers whose problems arise from the strong stance they have to take against their own, which is why Garry Disher’s Paul Hirsch piqued my interest almost immediately.
Unlike the badasses that populate the action thriller genre, Hirsch cannot solve his problems by making threats, cracking skulls, and moving on. He has to work within a rigid and somewhat vengeful system.
I have enjoyed watching him grow as he learns to maneuver the disdain he attracts from other police officers.
