Eli Broad
Eli Broad was born on June 6th, 1933. Eli passed away April 30th, 2021 at 87 years old. Eli Broad was born in New York City, New York, USA. Broad attended Michigan State University where he received an economics degree.
Eli Broad was a philanthropist and businessman. He was ranked by Forbes as the 233rd wealthiest person in the entire world and the 78th wealthiest in the US, with an estimated net worth of $6.7 billion.
Eli went to Michigan State University, majoring in accounting, with a minor in economics, graduating in 1954 cum laude. Among his college jobs were selling garbage disposals door-to-door, selling women’s shoes, and working as a drill press operator at Packard Motor, where he was a member of United Auto Workers.
Eli became the youngest Michigan resident to attain credentials of Certified Public Accountant, a record that he would hold until 2010. He worked as an accountant for 2 years while he also taught night classes at the Detroit Institute of Technology as an assistant professor of accounting in 1956.
Wanting to be his own boss, he founded an accounting firm and got offered office space by Donald Bruce Kaufman (the husband of his wife’s cousin) in return for doing the books for his small home building and subcontracting business.
The accounting work he was doing for Kaufman’s business led him to decide he should enter home building himself. They decided to partner up and build houses together. He borrowed $12,500 from his wife’s parents and Eli put up half of the capital in their first venture together, building two model homes in the Northeast Detroit suburbs where a new generation of first time home buyers had been flocking.
They offered a carport instead of a basement and streamlined the construction process, allowing them to price the houses so the monthly mortgage was cheaper than rent for a 2 bedroom apartment. It was priced at $13,700, and they called it the “Award Winner”. One weekend alone, they sold 17, and they’d built 600 homes in the Detroit suburbs in 2 years time.
The Art of Being Unreasonable: Lessons in Unconventional Thinking is Eli delivering his unorthodox success principles from a philanthropist and entrepreneur.
His embrace of “unreasonable thinking” has helped him to build 2 Fortune 500 companies, use his wealth to create this new approach to philanthropy, and amass personal billions. He’s helped fund scientific research institutes, K-12 education reform, and a few of the world’s best contemporary art museums. Then by contrast, “reasonable” people come up with all of the reasons that something different and new cannot be done, since nobody else has done it that way. Here is a book sharing the “unreasonable” principles, from negotiating risk-taking, from hiring to investing, which have all made Eli such a success.
If you are ever stuck doing what the reasonable people do, and not ever getting anywhere, allow Eli to show you how to be unreasonable, and just see how far your next endeavor can possibly go.
