My friends keep placing Denise Swanson on their best cozy mystery authors lists, but I can’t entirely agree. Swanson doesn’t write cozy mysteries. Yes, many of her stories feature a heroine that has to return to a small town after a long absence.
And those small towns are filled with quirky characters. But I think it would be more accurate to call Swanson a traditional mystery author.
The mysteries are always the most essential and entertaining parts of every novel. The town and its people are a second thought. This isn’t a complaint. Swanson’s characters are not always likable. However, the mysteries are so engaging that I have liked every Swanson novel I’ve read thus far, regardless of my opinion on the protagonists.
But I think we should get the classification right. Denise Swanson is not a cozy mystery author.
