I keep telling people that I’m a massive C.S. Lewis fan, but I don’t know how true that is because all I’ve read is The Chronicles of Narnia. I have such fond memories of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
I know, I know. It isn’t all that special by today’s standards, especially if you’re like me and you read a lot of grimdark. But to a child, Lewis’ language is nothing short of magical.
I re-read the novel every few years. In fact, I read it just a few weeks ago, and it held up. I was transported back to that random August night when I slid beneath the covers of my bed as a pre-teen, turned the flashlight on, and read that first page. I encourage everyone to give these novels a shot. Ignore everyone who thinks they are for children.
C.S. Lewis is best known for his fiction (metaphorical to the nth degree), but the flip side of his coin was being a skeptic-turned-apologist to boot. Although not necessarily a theologian himself, he dealt logically with the biblical claims of Christianity—not to mention their outworking in a believer’s life—and such works are worth reading as well.
Lewis is my favorite author ever. Both the children’s’ books and the theology are spectacular. So glad he wrote books while living a very busy life.
