Suzanne Collins: TV/Movies Based on Books
All of the books in The Hunger Games series were made into films and it is one of the most successful film franchises of all-time. It has grossed over two billion dollars to date and set many box office records during its run.
The first book was adapted in 2012 and released as The Hunger Games. The cast was set with Katniss Everdeen played by Jennifer Lawrence, Peeta Mellark played by Josh Hutcherson, Gale Hawthorne played by Liam Hemsworth, Haymitch Abernathy played by Woody Harrelson, Effie Trinket played by Elizabeth Banks, and President Coriolanus Snow played by Donald Sutherland. The first film was directed by Gary Ross.
The second book was adapted as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and was released in 2013. This film ended up being the highest grossing of all of the films in the series. Francis Lawrence took over as director for this film, a role he would keep for the rest of the movies in the series. This film saw Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee and Jeffrey Wright as Beetee Latier added to the cast.
The final book in the series was split into two seperate films: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 released in 2014 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 released in 2015. The final two films introudced new members to the cast, including Julianne Moore as President Alma Coin, Mahershala Ali as Boggs, and Natalie Dormer as Cressida. Mockingjay Part 1 had the largest opening day and weekend of any film in 2014.
Due to the success of the films there was interest in more films from the studio. When Suzanne Collins wrote the prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes it was quickly tapped for adaptation for release in 2023. Hunter Schafer was cast as Tigris Snow, Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird, Jason Schwartzman as Lucky Flickerman, and Peter Dinklage as Dean Highbottom. Franic Lawrence directed the new installment, his fourth Hunger Games film.
