Beverly Jenkins writes the kind of historical fiction you rarely see on the market. She isn’t shy about her views. Jenkins believes that the American history the publishing industry represents lacks diversity; that minorities have been removed from the picture.
This makes you assume that her stories will attempt to remedy this issue by exploring the trials and tribulations of black people during the days of slavery, not to mention the conflicts they had to fight to secure their rights in the 20th Century.
But Jenkins takes things a step further. I make it a point to recommend her work to young readers because the author shows that black people lived ordinary lives in previous centuries; that their existence was not defined by slavery and racism.
She explores their highs and lows, the relationships they pursued, the businesses they built, and more. In that regard, she is unique, so much so that some libraries in my area don’t know how to classify her work because she writes African American historical fiction that doesn’t touch on popular subjects like slavery.
