Betty Crocker is a brand and a made-up character used to promote food and recipes. She was created in 1921 by the Washburn-Crosby Company to give a personal touch when answering customer questions about their products.

In 1954, General Mills added a red spoon logo with Betty Crocker's signature to products like Gold Medal flour, Bisquick, and cake mixes. Her picture has appeared in ads, on product packaging, and in cookbooks.

The idea for Betty Crocker began with a special Gold Medal Flour ad in the Saturday Evening Post in 1921. It invited people to complete a jigsaw puzzle and mail it to the Washburn-Crosby Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In return, they would receive a pincushion shaped like a flour bag. The company also received hundreds of letters asking for cooking advice, along with 30,000 completed puzzles.

Realizing that many people writing in would prefer help from another woman, the Advertising Department suggested creating a friendly female personality that all the women answering letters could use. They chose the name Betty because it sounded cheerful and American, and the last name Crocker to honor William Crocker, one of the company’s directors.

The first portrait of Betty Crocker was created in 1936, and since then, it has been updated seven times to reflect the styles of each era.
