Diana Gabaldon: TV/Movies Based on Books

The Outlander series of books was turned into a television series by Starz in 2014. The show was developed by Ronald D. Moore, best known for Battlestar Galactica, and has aired for multiple seasons.

The first season of the television show is made up of sixteen episodes and are an adaptation of the first novel in the series. The second season of the show is based on Dragnofly in Amaber, the third season is based on Voyager, the fourth season is based on Drums of Autumn, and the fifth season is based on The Fiery Cross. Season six covers A Breath of Snow and Ashes and the seventh will cover An Echo in the Bone. The success of the series has also led to the development of a prequel series about Jamie Fraser's parents called Outlander: Blood of My Blood. The prequel series entered development in 2022.

The Outlander TV series stars Caitríona Balfe as Claire Fraser and Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser.

I was late to the Outlander party. But I think I was one of the lucky ones because I binged all the seasons in a single weekend. And when it was over, I felt that sense of withdrawal you get when you spend so much time in a fictional world that you don’t know what to do with yourself when the story ends.

But then my best friend injected hope into my life when she told me that Outlander was an adaptation of a series of novels. Now, everything feels right with the world. I am slowly making my way through the second novel.

You cannot imagine what it’s like to know that I have seven books to go. Yes, I get it. I already know what happens. But the novels feel different because they add so much depth. I love it.

For me, one reason that Diana Gabaldon’s books stand out is because of the really well-developed characters she has written. Not only does she provide great details that help you get to know the different characters, but the people she describes change and evolve, which draws you in. As a reader, I have to care about the people in the story in order to connect to them. I am often surprised at the number of best-selling books that don’t foster that kind of connection. If I don’t care about the characters, why bother reading the book?

I was very late to the Outlander fan club, after having taken 5 tries over 20 years to get into the first book! Once I was able to actually get into it, I couldn’t get enough of it, and gladly devoured the rest of the series as quickly as I was able. Lesson learned, don’t be afraid to put a book aside if you just aren’t feeling it, and try it again down the road! It might end up being one of your favorite reads at the right moment in time!
