No one writes WWII novels like Alan Furst. If you think you’ve read every significant book on the Second World War the publishing industry has to offer, Furst will surprise you. No, he doesn’t necessarily cover new ground.

But people don’t read historical fiction to learn about history. They read historical fiction for the entertainment value. And that is where Furst succeeds. He’s highly entertaining. I rarely obsess over prose. But this is where the author shines.

I remember reading ‘Night Soldiers’ and being mesmerized by his descriptive language. The scenes were laid out in my mind’s eye like a painting. The man’s a genius.
