I have only read the first novel in the Virgin River series by Robyn Carr but I can confidently recommend reading the book over the Netflix series.
I made the mistake of first watching the show before reading the novels and like it always is the case, the series is watered way down. I always cringe when people make a show from a book but then decide to make major changes.
Even though I have only read Virgin River the first of the series it is amazing. While it is a contemporary novel, Carr sets the novel in small town settings and the sense of community which is severely lacking in the show makes for a warm and fuzzy feeling.
I got the novel since the show ended on a cliff hanger and to find out if Jack and Mel got together in the end and I am glad I did. I am going to update this review once I read the rest of the series.
The first time I read Robyn Carr’s stories, I expected to hate them. The classmate who gave ‘Shelter Mountain’ to me loved it, but they also complained that it was a little slow. Since the last slow book this person gave me put me to sleep, I was confident that ‘Shelter Mountain’ would leave me in a coma.
But it started well enough, and I found myself enjoying it. Still, I was convinced that I would end up skimming the middle portion. But I was wrong again. The book was every bit as slow as I heard. Carr spent a lot of time exploring the daily lives of ordinary people. But I wasn’t bored.
Now, I’m on my third Robyn Carr novel, and the trend has continued. I keep waiting for the author to put me to sleep, but she keeps surprising me.
Virgin River – the best – so much so they made a movie series of them. All of her characters are wholesome and make you feel good. There are a few novels that aren’t as intriguing, but if you stick with them they have their good points in the end. I hope she keeps up the Virgin River type of books!! Looking forward to reading Holidays in Virgin River before the show comes out in November.
I usually do not read the book if I have watched the movie or the series. However, from all of the reviews that I have read, I think I need to make an exception for Virgin River. It seems that the books are superior to the adaptation for TV
Virgin River is a favourite show for me; I have still not managed to read the books in this series, let alone all the rest of her catalogue. I think I may have to hibernate for a few years and catch up on them all.
